This course compares Euro-American and Plains Indian cultures by focusing on the surprising similarities and the differences in the lives of two renowned figures: the great Lakota Sioux leader, Crazy Horse, and Union Civil War hero, Bvt. General George A. Custer. This course examines the history and mythology of cultural conflict on the western plains during the late nineteenth century. This course examines the origins of that violent discord, historic attempts to find compromise, the experiences of participants and victims, and the impacts and ramifications of those years of bloodshed and turmoil.
