This course introduces the student to the theoretical concepts and practical applications associated with the clinical and laboratory responsibilities of the medical assistant. Online coursework provides the student with the knowledge and skills needed to assist healthcare providers with routine and emergent care of patients in ambulatory care settings. Topics include the principles of confidentiality, scope of practice, specialty practices, standard precautions, infection prevention and control, medical lab practice, specimen collection, diagnostic testing, and documentation. This course is for students enrolled in the Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program. Instructor permission is required. The student must maintain employment at an affiliated healthcare agency throughout enrollment in the course. (4 lect.)
