    EDEC 2200 Early Childhood Practicum (2L,8LB,6CR) By actively participating in the care and education of young children in an early childhood program, students should become more proficient in administrative skills, increase their awareness of contemporary issues in early childhood, and demonstrate a high level of competence as a head teacher. Students will serve a total of 120 hours in directed field experience and 15 hours in seminar during the semester. Enrollment is limited to majors in early childhood education except by permission of the instructor. Prerequisites: EDEC 1100 and EDEC 1105, EDEC 1300 and EDEC 1305, or permission of the instructor.

    EDEL 1410 Theory I Seminar: Education (1L,1CR) This seminar is a hands-on application course designed to accompany and enhance MATH 1100, "Numbers and Operations for Elementary School Teachers." This is a required course for all prospective elementary teachers. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in MATH 1100.

    EDEL 2010 Mentoring in Education (1L,2LB,1-2CR) This course will focus on specific teaching techniques and strategies utilized when mentoring third, fourth, and fifth grade elementary students. Students in this course will also reflect upon strategies to continually improve teaching techniques. This course is associated with the Help Yourself Academy, an afterschool program designed to offer students the opportunity to focus on a math and science curriculum Prerequisite:Permission of the Education Faculty Member required.

    EDEL 2100 Family, School, and Community Engagement (3CR,3L)This course examines the relationship between the child, the family, the community, and teachers. Topics include strengthening adult-child relationships and parent- staff relationships in the home, school, and community settings, an awareness of strategies in developing positive and supportive relationships with families of elementary school children with special needs, including the legal and philosophical basis for family participation; family-centered services; and strategies for working with socially, culturally, and linguistically diverse families will be included. The importance of family involvement in school programs and parent education will be stressed.

    EDEL 2140 Teaching Literacy in the Elementary School (3L,3CR)Provides an acquaintance with basic assumptions underlying curriculum and processes in literacy and to give opportunity for selecting and using instructional materials. Prerequisite: ENGL 1010 & EDFD 2020.

    EDEL 2280 Literature for Children (3L,3CR)[E] A survey course designed for reading and discussion of works of literature for children. Selection of children's books for school, home, and library is stressed. In order to establish criteria for evaluation, students are expected to become acquainted with a wide sampling of children's literature including classics, both old and new. Prerequisite: ENGL 1010.

    EDEX 2484 Introduction to Special Education (3L,3CR) [E] This course is designed to meet the needs of education majors for a required course in Special Education. It provides a broad overview of effective intervention models of instructional and/or behavior techniques for special needs students within an inclusion setting and/or other continuum of special education options which meet the least restrictive environment. Finally, this class would be helpful for individuals in other fields who need an introduction to the field of special education. Prerequisite:EDFD 2020, ITEC 2360, AND EDFD 2100.
