Provides a general overview of issues in language change in the contemporary Spanish-speaking world. General topics include language vs. dialect, social factors affecting language variation/acquisition/maintenance, mechanisms of change, language contact effects, language attitudes, policy and planning, style and register and mixing of languages and bilingualism, among others, as they are seen in the Spanish language. Dual listed with SPAN 5070. Prerequisite: SPAN 3300 or LANG 4750.
